The enamel that covers our teeth is made from tough stuff, but it is not impervious to damage. It can be cracked if you are unfortunate, while it is also gradually worn down over the years from the countless meals you will eat. There’s also the problem of tooth decay which can also cause considerable damage. The good news is that our team of dental experts is on hand to help.

As Good as New

One way of overcoming wear, tear and other damage is to cover the tooth with a new protective cap. These protective caps are known as crowns, and they are a common dental procedure. Crowns help to restore even old teeth to their former glory in terms of functionality and appearance. If you are looking to restore your smile to its beautiful best, crowns might be just what you need.

Our team will offer a variety of materials for your crown to be made from. Which you choose will depend largely on your personal preferences, your requirements, and your budget. Of course, we are on hand to lend our expert advice to make sure you get the right type of crown for you.

Dental Crowns

A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap that improves the structure and cosmetics of a damaged or decayed tooth. During the procedure, your tooth must be completely reshaped to accommodate the shape of the crown. Once the tooth is reshaped, we will permanently bond the crown to the enamel using a special adhesive. Many crowns are fabricated these days with porcelain, due to its unmatched aesthetics.

Preparing the Tooth

Before fitting the crown, the tooth will first need to be examined and prepared. Our dentists will check the quality of the tooth overall to be sure no other procedures are required. Once your tooth has been thoroughly checked by our dentist and confirmed as suitable, the procedure can begin.

Our dentist will begin by administering a local anesthetic to help ensure you feel no pain during the procedure. The dentist will then prepare the surface of the tooth by cleaning it thoroughly, and by filing down the surface to make way for the crown. The amount that is filed down will depend largely on the type of filing that will be used. If a lot of the tooth is missing, this will be filled in with a type of cement.

Next, our dentist will need an impression of the tooth so the crown can be made to fit perfectly. This can be done with a type of putty, although a digital scanner can also be used. These impressions are then sent away so that a crown can be made to fit perfectly on your tooth.

Our dentists will provide you with a temporary crown that is fixed in place with a temporary cement while you wait for your new, permanent crown to arrive. Once your new crown has arrived, we will ask you back into the office so we can fir your new crown for you. Provided you look after your crown, and your teeth in general, it should be with you for a very, very long time.
