On the inside of the roof of your tooth is a soft tissue consisting of blood vessels called the pulp. Tooth decay and other dental issues might cause the pulp to become inflamed or infected. A fully developed tooth can function properly without the pulp. The pulp helps to grow the tooth during its developmental stages.
How Does Root Canal Help?
An inflamed pulp will, in most cases, cause an acute toothache. It is important to get it removed to relieve the pain. The pain can cause further harm to your body if left untreated for long. Pulp inflammation may be as a result of tooth decay, many dental procedures, or heavy hit impact. The pulp may be damaged even when there is no physical or visible damage on the tooth.
During the root canal procedure, the pulp is extracted, and the resultant cavity is filled up with a special rubber-like material named gutta-percha. As mentioned earlier, the strength of the tooth is not affected by the pulp removal if the tooth is fully developed and its roots are still firmly planted.
The root canal procedure eliminates the need for a dental implant. Most of the dental implants cannot function as normal teeth. They also have an unnatural feel in your mouth that you have to get used to. There is not much that will change about the appearance and function of your tooth after the root canal procedure.
You will still be able to use your tooth normally, even after the root canal procedure. The main essence of the procedure is to relieve pain and prevent further complications. The tooth can last a lifetime, even after undergoing the procedure. Of course, you need to exercise proper oral hygiene to ensure your teeth last longer.
Is the Root Canal Procedure Painful?
When you think of the removal of tissue of blood vessels, you can’t help but imagine that it is very painful. Root canal procedures are not as painful as many people believe. Many patients who have undergone the procedure before have reported that the process is as painful as that of getting a filling.
The damaged pulp is not as sensitive as it would be if it were it in good condition. Pulp removal, which is the part that concerns many, is not that painful. The rest of the procedure is just getting the cavity cleaned and washed up.
