Same-day dentures are also referred to as "immediate dentures." A same-day or immediate denture is a removable dental appliance used to replace missing teeth. These dentures are inserted on the same day your teeth are removed.

Our dentists use same-day dentures for patient whose natural teeth need to be extracted. We insert these dentures immediately, without having to wait for the gums to heal after the tooth extraction. There will be no waiting and healing between the appointments. At Gibson & Bartholomew Restorative and Esthetic Dentistry, we can provide you with same-day dentures so that you can walk out with a full and bright smile. Schedule a dental exam with us today to get started.

How Same Day Dentures Work

First, we will assess your jaw and teeth and then take impressions during your initial consultation. This is a very critical step since it ensures that your new dentures fit perfectly into your mouth. Our experts will then help you in choosing the correct shape, size, and color of the teeth to ensure that they match perfectly with your remaining teeth.

Since this process requires the dentures to be made quickly, we use cold-cure acrylic instead of warm-cure acrylics to make the dentures. Warm-cure acrylics used to make traditional dentures require 24 to 48 hours to complete. Cold-cure acrylics, on the other hand, need much less time.

However, dentures made from cold-cure acrylics aren't as strong as dentures made from warm-cure acrylics. Therefore, we advise our patients to not use same-day dentures as a permanent solution to their missing teeth problem.

Placement of Immediate Dentures

The creation and placement of immediate dentures differ from traditional dentures. One of the biggest differences is that immediate dentures are created before the teeth have been extracted while permanent dentures are created once the soft and hard tissues of the mouth have healed.

At Gibson & Bartholomew Restorative and Esthetic Dentistry, Dr. Kurt Gibson and Dr. Tripp Bartholomew will first take the impressions of your existing teeth and gums. These impressions will be used to create a set of duplicate artificial teeth which will be placed in your mouth immediately after extraction.

Once these dentures are made, you will arrive to get your teeth removed. Same-day dentures are inserted in your mouth immediately after the procedure, giving you a full smile.

If you don't mind waiting for several days, we can make you an immediate denture using warm-cure acrylic, which we can insert after your tooth (or teeth) are removed. Immediate dentures made from warm-cure acrylics are much stronger compared to same-day dentures made from cold-cure acrylics, and you can use them as a permanent solution.

Just before you receive your same-day dentures, which is a few hours after we take your impression, our dentists will prepare you for the extraction of your unwanted teeth. One good thing about same-day dentures is that we insert them to cover the tooth socket as soon as we remove your tooth. This makes it look like you have a new tooth.

Healing After Same Day Dentures

After the operation, you must take very good care of your oral hygiene. Even in areas where you do not have any natural teeth left, your gums and dentures need to be cleaned meticulously, as well, to prevent periodontal disease.

In the initial weeks, you will experience some bleeding and swelling from your gums. In eight to 12 weeks your gums and bone structure will settle down and shrink back to their original size. At this time, you must schedule an appointment with us so that we can monitor the health of your gums and see if your dentures need adjustment. We may recommend relining or adding a tissue conditioner to your dentures to give you a comfortable fit.

Keep in mind though that a same-day denture is rarely used as a permanent measure. Once your gums and teeth are fully healed, we recommend you get fitted with permanent dentures.

Benefits of Same Day Dentures

Same-day dentures usually come with several benefits. However, the most significant benefit is that you won't leave our offices with a missing tooth. Since most of your natural teeth are still in your mouth, it makes it easier for our specialists to duplicate the color, arrangement, and shape of the teeth. When we fix same-day dentures after your teeth are extracted, they act as a bandage, thus minimizing bleeding and protecting the soft tissues.

Also, same-day dentures allow you to establish your speech patterns soon thereafter. Furthermore, you don't have to worry about speaking with missing teeth, instead, you will learn how to speak with the dentures early on. Lastly, they will allow you to chew better since you will not have gaps in your mouth, and they will prevent facial distortion or the sunken-in look that can be caused by missing teeth.

The Drawbacks of Same Day Dentures

When the gum swelling recedes, and they start to heal, it can make the dentures move slightly, which means you might need more adjustments to re-align the dentures.

Alternatives to Same Day Dentures

There are alternatives to same-day dentures that we can provide as well. Traditional dentures are removable options that can be fabricated after your teeth have been removed and the gums have healed. The fit of these dentures will be more precise, once they are created after healing.

Can Anyone Wear Same Day Dentures?

Although same-day dentures can work well for many people, not everyone is a candidate for them. Some people may have specific oral issues or general health problems, and these people may be advised against getting same-day dentures.

If you are missing a majority of your teeth or are completely edentulous, schedule an appointment with us for more information about same-day dentures. Our experienced professionals at (336) 283-2593 can determine whether same-day dentures are a good choice for you. Give us a call today!
